In June 2019, the Germany based consulting firm KMPC asked us to complete a two week project. The two founders of KMPC were so impressed they visited us in person for four days to discuss their most ambitious project: an enterprise level solution for the multinational corporation RingMetall.

Through a two year process, we worked hand in hand with our clients creating an enterprise level solution which is currently tracking real time data on hundreds of machines at factories throughout the world. We built the entire application from the first meeting, the first line of code to the fully deployed product.

Understanding our client
Everyone on our team learned the core principles and concepts essential to serving our client, especially the manufacturing matrix of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness). We gained an understanding of the domain, the user environment, and the specific needs of each type of user.
Software Architecture
Working with our clients, we designed the software architecture, in this case, a modular micro-kernel approach. We then created a diagram and terminology that was understandable not only for our team but also our client and their clients. Our approach is based on “domain driven design” with its intuitive naming conventions.

Navigation
We soon realized that given the complexity of the application, we had to fully redesign the navigation concepts and design. The diversity of users and their needs ranged from a machine operator, to managers, planners, all the way to the CEO of RingMetall. We needed intuitive navigation supporting a range of processes.
Database Design
The Mongo database was straightforward, however the INFLUX database needed to be designed to calculate and store real time data on hundreds of machines and then produce data analysis on demand whether it was aggregate data on 10 machines or hundreds of machines from several factories.
The Schedule Module
We are all quite pleased with the outcome but in the midst of the creative process, these were the toughest of times. Our understanding of the domain and the user environment was essential for creating a product that served the interests of our client under any and all circumstances.
The Andon Board
The Andon board is displayed on the factory floor and must visually communicate the status of machines. With just a glimpse, the floor manager can see if any machine needs his immediate attention. The Andon board shows each machine’s vital statistics and color coding to indicate overall condition.
Machine Operator Terminal
Machine operators make multiple uses of the terminal. If the machine is not running, they enter a reason for the malfunction. They can change the time span of a particular machine status. They can enter the order that the parts are being manufactured for. And they can monitor progress on other machines according to their user privileges.
The Orders Module
Along with the schedule module, this was one of the most challenging. We started the design process looking at data tables and then realized we needed to step back and conceive of the domain andthe user environment. Once we understood the actual people and orders process, we could effectively design and code this feature.
